Mr. Ching Lin
Chesapeake, Virginia 23320
Dear Mr. Lin:
Thank you for contacting me to express your opposition to the "One China" policy and your support for a democratic and independent Taiwan. I appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts on this issue with me.
With all eyes focused on Iraq and the war on terrorism, few truly have an understanding of the changing global trends that will be influencing America's economy and defense in the coming decade. Since the mid-1990s, U.S. interests in preventing conflict across the Taiwan Strait have been challenged increasingly by the military modernization underway in China and moves by Taiwan that are perceived in Beijing as provocations that would consolidate an independent status.
As you may know, I am the founder and Co-Chairman of the Congressional China Caucus, a forum for Members of Congress who share a common interest in the emergence of China as a political, economic and military actor on both the regional and global stage. The caucus will investigate China's global reach and the consequences of its growing international, economic and political influence on U.S. interests.
I share your belief that a stable relationship between Taiwan and the United States is critical to the spread of democracy in Asia. Please be assured that I have taken your opinion into consideration and will keep your thoughts in mind as I continue to monitor this important issue.
As your Representative in Congress, I appreciate your input in this matter. As always, if I may be of assistance to you on this, or any other issue, please feel free to contact me in my Washington DC office at (202) 225-6365 or online at
www.house.gov/forbes. With kind personal regards, I am
Yours truly,

J. RANDY FORBES
Member of Congress
